A superb Medieval castle with immaculate gardens, Powis Castle is a fantastic example of Welsh history to explore. This stately home is a National Trust property and offers well-preserved collections of art and artefacts to browse, as well as beautiful grounds including Italianate terraces and an Edwardian formal garden.

Perhaps the most famous national park in Wales, Eryri (Snowdonia) shows off some of the very best wildlife, nature, and landscapes that Wales has to offer. The edge of the national park is only a 50-minute drive from Oakwood Valley. Explore the rich mining history as well as the valleys, woodlands, and rivers.

A perfect spot for anglers, walkers and cyclists alike, Lake Vyrnwy is a beautiful lake set at the foot of the Eryri National Park. Nearby you can find the Rhiwagor Waterfall just north of the lake. Anglers can catch rainbow and brown trout, and walkers can take on the Giants of Vyrnwy Trail (dog friendly too!).

Montgomery Castle may be a ruin now, but this 11th-century castle is still worth seeing for those who get excited by history. Built on the border at the time of the Norman Conquest, nowadays you can explore the castle remnants. Be sure to stop by the Ffridd Faldwyn Iron Age Hillfort too, just a short distance from the castle.

The excavated ruins of Dolforwyn Castle are impressive, as this 13th-century monument offers excellent views of the nearby valleys. You can also visit the Dolforwyn Woods, an ancient protected woodland and nature reserve known for its diverse range of birds.

The local village is just three miles from Oakwood Valley, but it’s worth stopping by for more than just the essentials. Hop on the Llanfair Caereinion steam railway to ride historic locomotives. Travel up to the nearby market town of Welshpool, all while enjoying the puffing of steam engines and the rolling countryside views. A great way to sightsee!
