April 2025
Looking for a proper feel-good day out this summer? Well, you’re in luck – the annual Montgomery Show is back on Saturday 16th August, and is shaping up to be a real belter.
This isn’t just any town show. The Montgomery Show has been going strong since 1895 and is a brilliant local event that unites the whole community – with live performances, vintage cars and tractors, trade stalls, and plenty of competitions. There’s truly something for everyone: whether you’re five or 95!
Feeling crafty? Don’t miss the handicraft section – from knitting and crochet to painting, ornaments, felt creations, and even masks, it’s a treasure trove of local talent.
Green-fingered folks can get involved with the fruit, veg, and plant competitions, and there’s loads of yummy local food and drink to tuck into throughout the day.
With a colourful history, the Montgomery Show is at the heart of the community. It all began back in 1895 on the Bowling Green, before moving to its current home at Lymore Meadow.
Back in the day, the show was held on a Thursday, and the fun didn’t stop when the stalls packed up – the real chaos began with a legendary confetti battle on Broad Street. Locals of all ages would join in, making it a much-loved tradition. Sadly, after the 1965 show, the council put an end to the confetti mayhem following grumbles from the street cleaners who had the not-so-fun job of clearing it all up. Still, it remains one of Montgomery’s fondest memories – a true snapshot of the town’s playful spirit.
Today, the event is organised by the lovely volunteers of the Montgomery Show Committee, so it’s a real labour of love – and it shows. The setting? Stunning. Picture rolling meadows, a buzzing showground, and a warm and welcoming vibe that makes you feel right at home.
Drive out of Montgomery with the Town Square on your right, past the garage, around the bend, and you’ve reached your destination. You can’t miss it!
Due to the unpredictable British weather, parking on the showground itself isn’t recommended, but don’t worry – there’s plenty of space on the football field right next door.
So, grab your wellies (just in case!), round up the family, and come and join in the fun.
And if you’re a bit of a history buff, check out ‘The Story of Montgomery’ by Anne and John Welton – it’s packed with great tales from the town’s past (confetti battles in the street included!).
Just a 25-minute drive from Oakwood Valley, why not make a weekend of it and book a lodge for a real rural escape this summer?
