The Llanfair Caereinion Show on 30th August is a must-visit for anyone wanting to experience rural traditions. Just eight miles from Oakwood Valley Lodges, this historic event has been bringing together arts & crafts, agriculture, and family-friendly entertainment for over 50 years. From sheep shearing to vintage machinery displays, this fun-filled day offers something for everyone, all set against the stunning Welsh backdrop of Llysun.
The show has a fascinating history – with the first ever event held in 1891. It was temporarily discontinued during World War II, before a Horticultural and Arts & Crafts Show (organised by the Recreational Association held at the Public Institute), was hosted annually for a decade from 1962.
In April 1973, a public meeting was called, supporting to revive the Llanfair Caereinion and District Agricultural & Horticultural Society – and its first show was held that September. Since then, the show has grown into one of the region’s biggest annual agricultural events, with its rich heritage still firmly at its heart.
It now takes place at Llysun, near SY21 0EL, thanks to the kind permission of the Tudor family.
Bringing together communities of people – both those from the local area and visitors from further afield – the show is a fun-packed day with a variety of attractions, including a dog show, horse and pony competitions, and cookery contests. And it boasts high-energy action too, with the unmissable speed shearing showdown.
If that’s not enough, you can also browse the vintage machinery on display, bringing a touch of rural nostalgia to the show. Plus, for those who love gardening, the show features a beautiful horticultural exhibition, as well as plenty of trade stands to explore – from local artisans to farmers selling their produce.
